Your new movie Diablo
Rojo PTY - in a few words, what is it about, and what can you tell
us about your character in it?
It’s
a story about folk stories of Panama told in a classic 80s style. My
character is Josefina/ La Tulivieja, from the tale about the girl that lost her baby or
threw it in
the river and is damned because
of this, mixed with this 17 year old, Josefina, from
Chiriqui that is in the countryside
of Panama.
What did you draw upon to
bring your character to life, and how much Alejandra Araúz can we find in
Josefina?
First I had to change my hair color and do some tests for hair extension
so I can achieve the look of a girl from the countryside. I also had to work on creating this naive
and sweet girl that got fucked
up by this older guy and the fear and abandonment makes her bitter. The
sweet girl is not so much like me, so I created that and created a rage
that made sense with
her character. For me, I was also trying to give some motivation to Josefina
and the tale with La
Tulivieja, I am definitely on her side and Melida's. I
also got to create the scream of La Tulivieja, and it has something to do
with the destiny of Josefina. There
is no Alejandra in Josefina. But
this is my second time playing that same character, Josefina/La Tulivieja.
How did you get involved with the project in
the first place?
I know Sol [Sol Moreno interview
- click here] and Jordi [J. Oskura
Nájera interview - click here] from the art scene in Panama, they called me when they
were doing the second
casting call, they were looking for Josefina and Melida, also Leo [Leo
Wiznitzer interview - click here] had
worked with me in a
horror short film and he talked to Jordi and Sol about me.
To what extent could you identify with Diablo
Rojo PTY's horror theme?
I love witches so I connect a lot with that part of the movie, and I like
that the witches and La Tulivieja
are going after the bus driver and all the other men, I identify with that
kind of horror
because I want the monsters and witches to get them.
What can you tell us
about Diablo
Rojo PTY's director Sol Moreno, and what was your collaboration
like?
Sol is pretty sure of the images she wants to show, she works very well
with Jordi so they have
a great chemistry between the direction and the script. Sol also knows
about different aspects of the movie regarding art department and special effects, so that makes her
a director that knows
what she is doing when directing horror. The
collaboration was great, she knew how she wanted the character of
Josefina, and then they had an acting coach
for us that prepared us for acting in a horror movie.
Do talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set
atmosphere?
I just had to go like four times, and each time was cool and in different
places. I really enjoyed making
the movie. They
always told me the scary things happen when it was not my turn to shoot, I
guess it was because
La Tulivieja was me.
Any future projects you'd like to share? I'm
going to be be doing theater, creating some new comedy projects with my partner
Simon Tejeira, who plays the priest
when he's young in Diablo
Rojo PTY. And
now I have started working on a project for a documentarist from Panama,
Ana Endara, and Pilar
Moreno, an artist from Spain who lives in Panama. About a woman from the
countryside of Panama
that had some particular way of collecting memorabilia.
I won’t be acting here but doing some work with voices.
What
got you into acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal
training on the subject?
I always liked creating characters and telling stories about them, so it was
pretty natural for me to pursue this career. I received classes from
different actors from Latin America, but still have more
to learn.
