What are some of the film projects that you have been in during your
career?
I've acted in Próxima, a sci fi feature film directed by
Spanish director Carlos Atanes. I've also worked in a documentay with
another Spanish director, Karlos Alaustrey, Roca Bon or the Search
of the Sublime. I have a acted in many short films and I'm a
photograpy model too.
Do you have a favorite among these?
Working with Carlos Atanes was very special, I loved it. But there is
also one short film I adored doing called Teseos. It was
directed by another Spanish director, Manuel Nielsen. It can't be seen
yet, as it's in post production.
A least favorite?
Not really... every new project gives me a new perspective on my job
and so, every project is positive for me.
Anything new in the works?
I'm going to start shooting a TV pilot very soon... I'm very excited
about it!
How do you view the state of Spanish cinema today?
Well, there's the bad economy... and Spanish directors rely too much
on State funds. I think that it's important to create a film industry,
like the ones than can be found in other countries, based on private
capital. I think that slowly, directors are being conscious of that.
Do you have favorite Spanish actresses or actors from the past that
you admire?
Nuria Espert is amazing... I think that she might definitely be the
one.
Where did you study acting?
I didn't really study acting, meaning that I don't have a degree or a
diploma, but I studied the International Baccalaureate, and IB is very
strict about including arts in education, so I started studying drama
ever since I was fourteen years old. When I finished high school, I went
to the Complutense University of Madrid, where they had a drama group. I
entered the group and stayed with them for two years. After finishing my
studies (Audiovisual Communication), I did a master's degree on
television presenting, which involved a lot of drama. I then got accepted
in a theater company and I'm still there. I've been studying Meyerhold
and Bertold Brecht techniques for more than five years.
You also speak a number of languages ...
Yes My father was a diplomat, and my whole family lived in Vienna and
Luxembourg during quite a number of years. I learnt French, English and
a little bit of German. Languages are extremely important in the acting
business.
Do you have a web page where people can contact you?
Of course!!! http://www.beatrizurzaiz.com
Do you ever attend international film fests or fan festivals?
In 2006, the whole Próxima
team attended Fantasporto, the international sci fi Oporto film festival
because Próxima was being shown there. It was a fantastic
experience.
Do you have any interesting behind the scenes stories to tell
concerning your career?
When shooting the last scenes of Próxima, we had to do
them in a chroma studio. The owners wanted to kick us out because they
said that time was over and they had to close the place. It was supposed
to be such a serene scene and we had to rush through it... I don't know
how it turned out to look so good!
Is there any particular director you prefer to work for?
I like directors who respect the script writers. Once one has a good
script, a very good movie can come out, but no good movies can come out
without a good script. I also prefer to work with directors, who, as I
said before, rely on private funding rather than on State funding.
When it comes to directors do you prefer someone who tells you
everything to do you prefer a director who allows you as an actor
to improvise on the script?
Well, it's a mixture of both ideas. I like a director who directs me
closely, but I also like to be able to create my own character. I
don't like improvising on the text, though...
What sort of roles do you prefer as an actress?
Don't ask me why but I like dark intense tormented roles... for
example, the woman who hasn't been able to get over the fact that her
son died because of her, even though it was an accident and now she
is absolutely tormented and obessed about it... I know that it's a bit
exaggerated, but that's what I like... I find it easier for me to do
drama than comedy!
What are your other interests outside of acting?
I love going to the cinema, biking, spending time with my family,
petting my cats... I'd rather stay at home and watch a good film than go
out clubbing... which of course, doesn't mean that I don't go out once
in a while!!!!! But I'm quite shy and reserved, so...
Any closing comments?
Thank you so much for this wonderful interview! I really hope that I
can continue living of my passion and that the projects become bigger
and bigger!
Thanks again.
And thank you for the interview!
