Your upcoming film Captain Battle: Legacy War - in a few
words, what is it about, and what can you tell us about your character?
Here's a shocker: Captain Battle is an actual comic book hero from the
1940's. When I first heard about the film and Captain Battle, I thought it
was a complete rip-off of Captain
America. But I was surprised to find
that he actually existed in the comic book world and although he has
similarities to Captain
America - his story is different. So think of the
mega blockbuster Captain America and then take away $200 million
budget and big special effects and then add in the present day and some
hot, half naked women and bing bang boom - Captain Battle: Legacy War pops
out. Generalization here but Captain Battle is definitely a man of honor
and justice and will kick ass to defend it.
As
I suspect that you are not secretly a superhero in real life (but of
course you wouldn't tell) and have thus little first-hand experience in
superheroing - how do you prepare for a role like this?
I may
or may not be an authentic super hero in my spare time in my own living
room, in my underwear and alone on a Friday night.
Luckily I feel like I've been prepping for a superhero role for my whole
life. Sounds corny but I think it's true. Heavy action films are my
specialty and I generally try and live by certain moral and ethical
codes that I think share some of the same characteristics as some of the
popular superheroes.
One thing I can tell you I did to prepare was that I shaved my chest.
When's the last time you saw a hairy chested super hero??
In
your personal life, are you at all into superheroes/comicbooks, and prior
to filming, were you even aware of the relatively obscure original Captain
Battle-comics from the 1940's?
I'm not a big comic book guy. I was into it a bit growing up but it
never stuck. I remember when I was about 12 or 13 and I spent like $10
on a certain Spider-Man comic and I left the bag at the arcade. When I
went back to get it I saw some kid walking out of the arcade with it and
I ended up chasing him and cornering him in the bathroom to get it back.
I think that was the last straw for me and comics, they were dangerous
to my health.
I touched upon this before but yeah, I had no idea about Captain
Battle.
There's probably a hundred comic book dudes that I've never heard of and
they probably have some awesome super abilities. I'm guessing he never
really took off because he wasn't a Marvel hero and/or maybe
Captain
America was just like a suped up version of Captain Battle or something.
I do think Captain
America is a little more kid-friendly than Battle. I
think Battle is more of a rugged guy, not so manicured or as I used to
say growing up, not as 'goody two shoes'.
How did you get
hooked up with the project, and what drew you to it in the first place?
I got hooked up as Captain Battle through a friend of mine, Marlene
McCohen. We had just met and were working on a project together (Revelations, which is shit in your pants awesome) and she was already
attached to Captain Battle and knew the casting directors and producers.
She basically did all the talking and presented me in a good light to
the men in charge. Whatever she said worked and I was happily presented
the role.
How often does one get to play a superhero?? I had to take this role. I
knew and had worked with a few of the filmmakers, the production company
and some of the other actors on other projects, and it was a no-brainer
for me. That and the fact that it was a superhero, I got to do my own
stunts and it was a superhero - oh yeah, and it was a superhero, I had
to do this.
You
are also starring in the webseries Revelations, which has premiered
only just. A few words about that one and your character in it?
I
can't tell you enough how awesome Revelations is going to be and how
stoked I am about the whole project. The story of Revelations takes place
immediately after the Biblical rapture and follows my character and
another as we try and figure out what to do. I play Jeremy, an ex-Marine
who has hallucinations or visions about a mysterious cabin tucked away in
a forest. I want to find that cabin because I think it has our answers.
All the while the Earth is overrun with Demons who hunt for humans. Think
The Walking Dead meets Stephen King's The Stand. Again,
your character in Revelations finds himself in a situation
you have almost certainly never been in (unless of course I overslept the
last Rapture) - so how did you prepare? And which character did you
actually put more of yourself into/find more of yourself in, Jeremy in Revelations
or Captain Battle?
You'll love this one. I've been preparing for this kind of role my whole
life - haha! You may ask how the hell did my life prepare me for a
character that fights off demons and the end of the world - and it'd be
a good question that I don't know how to answer. I'm somewhat
introverted by nature in the way that I feel most comfortable and
productive alone or with just small groups of friends. Some say the more
the merrier and I just am the complete opposite, generally speaking of
course. I think Jeremy in Revelations is like that too. So when the end
of the world comes, it's not as bad or as hard to deal with for Jeremy
to be alone and having to survive as it might be for others. Another
thing is that I think we both take pride with the responsibility of
helping those who can't help themselves, that is if they're at least
actively trying.
I found a large part of myself in both roles actually. 'Doing what's
right, striving for solid moral character, seeking virtue' - those are
things I hold important. Anyway, I don't want to keep rambling on this.
If you made it all the way through this response - you're very patient
person - well done!
How did you actually get involved
with Revelations in the first place?
Just auditioned for it. Old run-of-the-mill story here. I was the very
first guy to audition for the role and I knew I had a solid audition but
being the very first actor, I figured that they were seeing so many guys
and surely I'd be forgotten by the end of the day.
Side Note: You can watch the first two episodes of Revelations on www.RevelationsTheSeries.com.
More will be released there and on Youtube throughout the next 5 months.
What
can you tell us about Revelations' director Robert Michael Ryan,
and what was your collaboration like? Robert is an awesome
fella! I love him for his creativity and vision on this project. He's laid
back but particular enough to know what he needs and wants - a fantastic
trait for a director, and person too. I think we work well together, he's
open to ideas but honestly, he already has a good mind on the project. In all honesty,
how much fun is it to shoot demons and Nazi zombies? All
you can imagine that it is. The actors who play the demons in Revelations
are really cool guys and I give them so much praise for living in that
makeup. And one of the lead Nazis in battle is one of my really good
friends and it was a ton of fun fighting with him and beating the hell out
of each other. Honestly, I do feel bad sometimes getting to be the hero,
always ultimately winning in the end. I think all actors should get to do
the ass kicking. Any
other present/future projects you'd like to talk about?
I just got cast in a cool feature coming out in 2013 called Alienate - http://www.alienatemovie.com.
Not too many details on that just yet but I'll let you know.
I'd definitely like to mention an awesome Sci-Fi/Action/Drama flick I
did last year in NYC called Terminal Legacy [interview
with Terminal Legacy-director Brian Kazmarck - click here].
I really think it's going to be a fantastic film and it's one that I
would be a fan of even if i had nothing to do with it. Here's the trailer for it: https://vimeo.com/40675637
or http://www.terminallegacythemovie.com.
It's an indie film that deserves some attention and I hope the right
people see this one because it's too cool to sit on a shelf somewhere
for eternity.
