How would you, in a few words, describe your new album More
Content?
First and foremost More Content is a continuation of what I started
during the 2020 pandemic when I was working on my self-titled album
David Rosen. About half of these songs were started at the same time
while locked down, and these continue my attempt to grow as an artist
and do things I could never do musically on past albums, playing with
new musical ideas, more advanced software, and more complex, more
dynamic methods of making music. It's also for the most part my most
upbeat album so far. What inspired you to record and release More
Content in the first place?
I'm always inspired to make music. As a matter of fact while working on
More Content I've been concurrently working on my next two albums at the
same time and kind of pre-planning another. So there's never really a
starting point with me. I'm just constantly making... more content. Part
of the reason I decided to name the album that (even though I absolutely
hate the word "content" and the title is definitely very
tongue in cheek). Do talk about some of
your stylistic influences on More Content!
My biggest influences are always The Cure, Depeche Mode and Nine Inch
Nails, and those 3 still fit with this album. I feel like as I continue
scoring films, I'm letting more and more film scores creep into my
influences as well, everything from more modern electronic scores to
classics. Like I said I was also very interested in making this my most
upbeat album and other than one ambient track (Ascending)
and a couple of more midtempo pieces, the majority of this album is much
more upbeat than usual for me. How
did you go about composing the tracks for the album?
I use Studio One as my DAW and a whole host of synth and sample based
software including the Native Instruments suite and lots of expansions,
as well as Omnisphere, Keyscape and Nexus 2. While my main setup hasn't
changed much in the last few albums, I find myself digging in deeper to
take advantage of more and more of what all of this stuff can do. Even
with 100s of songs released, I've barely scratched the surface (not that
that stops me from buying more software because I can't help myself). What
can you tell us about your recording sessions for More Content?
Nowadays I spend more time on my podcasts (Piecing It Together and
Awesome Movie Year) than I do on music. It's just been a real balance
for me between those, the albums, being hired to compose music for films
and other podcasts and other kinds of projects, as well as everything
else in life. So sessions are a little more erratic. I was also scoring
three feature films in the time I was working on More Content. The films
Move Me No Mountain, Jacqueline, and Inexistent, which you'll hopefully be able to see them all
soon. But jumping back and forth between them, the album, the songs I
made that didn't fit on this album but will be on a future album.
There's just been a lot and it's been constant creativity. The
$64-question of course, where has More Content been released?
The limited edition CD is available on Bandcamp at
https://davidrosen.bandcamp.com, and
of course the album is also on streaming on Spotify, Apple Music and
everywhere else. You can find links to all the places to check out my
music on my website at https://www.bydavidrosen.com
Anything
you can tell us about audience and critical reception of your album?
Funny enough, as podcasting has taken over my time, I've only gotten
more listeners from the podcast world. Promoting my music to musicians
has always felt kind of pointless. So I'm getting a lot more listeners
nowadays who actually give feedback, and the favorite songs from More
Content have been extremely varied. The title track More has
gotten a lot of attention as well as the tracks Trapped in the
Beat and the first single Antiviral. Any
future projects you'd like to share?
First up will be a couple more music videos from More Content. I've got
one already done for Blacklight that I'll be releasing early
in 2023. Then will be an animated video for Ascending.
There's also one in the works for Warrior, and maybe I'll
get to do one or two more. Then I've got another album I've already
announced called And Other Unexplained Phenomena on the way
which will be an album that leans very heavily into my dark side. I've
always described my music as dark, and there's always a lot of dark,
mysterious, melancholy stuff throughout my albums, but this one will be
the heaviest I've ever done and never let up from beginning to end. It's
over half way done, but it MIGHT not be my next album. Something else
might creep its way in first, but we'll see. It's definitely on the way.
Your/your album's

Anything else
you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask?
The album cover for More Content is actually me standing in front of a
video wall made up of 64 (8x8) films that I've worked on music for.
Either features, shorts, music videos, promotional videos, ads,
commercials, TV. It's a lot of... content. Thanks
for the interview!
