Your new movie Beach Massacre at Kill Devil Hills - in a few
words, what is it about? Beach
Massacre at Kill Devil Hills is about a mom, Stacy played by the
amazing Taya Parker, who wants to get away for the weekend that her
abusive ex-husband is getting out of jail.
So, she takes her daughter (Chalet Brannan) and her four friends,
Sarah (Sarah French), Selina (Christina Schimel), Roselinde (Alex Devivo)
and Charlie (Debroah Funes) to her parent’s beach house. Soon
they’re in a game of survival and trying to last the night. What
can you tell us about your co-writer John Saunders, and what was your
collaboration like?
John
is such an awesome writer, his series of books The Last Spartan are
absolutely killer!
So,
collaborating with John is always fun. After
writing the outline, one of us will then write a draft of the script,
since John lives in North Carolina and I’m in Canada,
then sends it to me or I send it to him, and one of us will then
start to do our pass on the script and make any changes.
Then this process will go on until we feel like we’re done.
Do talk about your Beach Massacre at Kill Devil Hills'
approach to horror for a bit! Beach
Massacre is a slow burning thriller, it builds with each scene, with a lot
of twist and turns, and a lot of dead bodies along the way. With
an ending that I don’t think a lot of people see coming. What
can you tell us about your beach locations, and what was it like filming
there? We filmed in
beautiful North Carolina, we had access to a small beach, which was a
blessing but also a curse, regarding sound.
There was originally supposed to be this entire scene shot down on
the beach, but the day of, the weather wasn’t that great, and the waves
were just going to kill the dialog and would have been a costly post
production fix to do all the ADR for the scene. So
I quickly had to change the scene to shooting up at the beach house,
change all the blocking in the scene to make it work, and I’m happy with
the result.
A few words about your overall
directorial approach to your story at hand?
I
approached Beach Massacre like I do any project, there’s a lot of prep
in talking with the actors about who these characters are, I like doing a
lot of rehearsals, a lot of table reads, so basically by the time we get
to set, everyone is on the same page. Then
it’s just a case of small adjustments. Do
talk about your key cast, and why exactly these people? This
was an amazing cast to work with and collaborate with, they came every day
prepared and really made my job too easy.
We had wanted to work together for a long time, and finally this
project was the one that made that happen, it was just about timing and
scheduling and it all came together like the perfect storm. What
can you tell us about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere? We
shot Beach Massacre in two different states, California and in North
Carolina, which was a challenge. But
we were lucky to keep the same crew for both shoots, so everyone came
together as a little film family. The
atmosphere on set was fun, relaxed, a lot of jokes, but then it came down
to filming everyone had their game faces on and ready to go. Which
was just a blast to watch.
Anything you can tell us
about audience and critical reception of Beach Massacre at Kill Devil
Hills? From a
critical point of view, the film was a success, Beach Massacre won
numerous awards during its festival run, including being nominated for
Best Picture. Then when it
came out last year, Beach Massacre sold out everywhere, and was #26 horror
film in the country, so I think the audience was ready for the film. Any
future projects you'd like to share?
Right
now, John and I are working on our next film We Live in Darkness, a body
horror film, which is going to just blow people away.
I’m also working on my new collection of short stories entitled Book
of Bad Dreams, which you can find on my website.
Also,
the latest in the series The Last Spartan, written by my co-writer John
Saunders, Spartan
Kryptea which is the 3rd book in
the series, is currently out for everyone to read.
