First of all, why don't you introduce yourself to those of us who
don't already know you?
Hello
my name is Shannon Ritch aka “The Cannon".
Do talk about some of your
current movie projects for a bit! Currently I’m working on a feature
called MR9 with Micheal Jai White and Frank Grillo to name a few top actors, this
is a 007-type action film. Just finished a
Netflix film called
Absolute
Dominion, it is a futuristic MMA-type film like Mortal Combat. A lot of
action in this one. I’m scheduled to work on a feature called Wrath, co-starring with some top actors
- can’t wait to be able to talk about this
one. Any future projects
you'd like to share? I have several in the works, but as you know in the acting world there is a lot of
talk until there is a
contract. It’s all talk at this point. Before you went into acting, your
main claim to fame was as a mixed martial artist and professional wrestler
- so why don't you talk about that aspect of your career? I was a MMA
fighter for over 30 years starting in 1991 pre-UFC, no rules no rounds no
weight classes bare knuckle fighting all over the world. I have made a
great career fighting, seeing the world and making friends all over.
Russia, Japan, China, great places I had only read about in books. I ended
my MMA career after 30 years as an 8x MMA world champion. Also holding the
record for more MMA fights than any living fighter. I have 8 world titles
and also I am 26-3-0 in bare knuckle boxing - also holding a world title
in that sport as well. What
made you go into acting eventually, and did you receive any formal
training on the subject? And to what extent has your fighting career
informed your acting?
I started doing small parts on TV shows Walker Texas Ranger,
iCarly, Numbers, CSI Las Vegas etc.
After a
lot of hard work I finally got my SAG card and now I am part of the union.
Hard work pays off. Being a MMA fighter and professional wrestler, it was
an easy transition into films - it prepared me better than if I were to have
taken acting classes - directors tell me I am a natural. I owe all of
that to being in front of the cameras and being on the mic for so many
years. What were some of your past
highlights of your acting career? Some
of the best highlights of course are working with amazing actors like
Mickey Rourke, Frank Grillo, Bruce Willis, Cuba Gooding jr, Kevin Dillion,
Micheal Jai White, Vernon Davis, Sean Patrick Flannery - to name a few
actors I’ve had the pleasure to work with. How would you describe
yourself as an actor, and some of your techniques to bring your characters
to life?
I would have to say I’m more of the action star type, I love
action fight scenes, if I could work my way up to be like a Jason Statham-type
I'd love that.
Actors (and indeed actresses) who inspire you? Actually
I love the Rock, I think is fantastic actor, and the guy has something
special that makes you wanna watch his films., I also love Denzel
Washington, from action to drama the guy is amazing. Your
favourite movies?
My all time favorite is The Ten Commandments, that was one of the BEST
films of all time, of course I love classics, but Shawshank Redemption,
Rocky, Roadhouse, Deadpool - if they are on I will always watch
them.
... and of course, films you really
deplore? Foreign films, I’m just not into
them. Your website, social media, whatever else? You can reach me on

Anything
else you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask? I do a lot of talking at schools and
in front of young
people, and I love to say “it’s nice to be important but most of all
it’s important to be nice!“ Just feel like you should treat people
the way you would want to be treated, and if we all lived by that we may
have a better world. Thanks
for the interview! Thank you!
