First of all, why don't you indroduce yourself to those of us
unlucky enough to not already know you?
My name is Jasi Lanier, I am a stuntwoman, actress and stunt
coordinator So how does one
become a stunt girl and stunt coordinator in the first place, and what
kind of training did you undergo? And what kind of stunts do you
specialize in? There is no one way into stunts. Everybody
has a different path. Most people already have family in the
business or come into it with a strong and elite background, in
gymnastics, martial arts, cirque, motorcycles or cars. I am
constantly training to improve and expand my skills. I have a black
sash in kung fu, purple belt in Tae Kwon Do, train Filipino Martial arts,
do aerial, scuba, ride horse, dirtbikes, motorcycles etc. I am
not a specialist with stunts, more of an all around stunt girl but I do
love training fights, weapons and cars the most currently. So let's talk about
some of your recent movies for a bit, and your work on them: The
Adventures of Paula Peril? And anything you can tell us about
that movie's sequel yet?
Jasi with Valerie Perez in
The
Adventures of Paula Peril |
The
Adventures of Paula Peril is movie based
on the comic book starring Valerie Perez. I play the leader of the bad
gang in the first movie and have a fight with the main actress. I was also
a stunt coordinator on that movie. It is set to release in May of this
year.
The sequel has a bit of a Indiana Jones kind of feel. I am
on a non-disclosure to say anything about this movie though I will say
that we have already started previzing the fights and working with
actresses on action. Looking great already and it is still maintaining the
comedy and sexiness of the first movie with the action.
Adam 8?
Adam 8 is a sci-fi movie. An illness
wiped out our ability to produce the X chromosome and since we are about
to run out of genetic matter and cloning attempts have failed, a team of
female astronauts travel to a distant terraformed planet to see if any
healthy males exist. It stars Dean Cain. I am stunt coordinating and
playing an alien warrioress. Sons
of Liberty?
Sons
of Liberty is an independent action
movie starring Tamer Hassan, Keith David and Elyse Levesque. I stunt
coorindated the movie and played Agent X. We shot it in Mobile, AL. Def
the coolest part was shooting on a military ship and coordinating the big
fight between two of the main actresses. Sons
of Liberty is currently
released and available at Walmart. Furious 7? And how
does work on a high profile franchise movie compare to work on indie
films?
In big budget films, you have more time and money to
make things happen. As a stuntwoman and performer, I do'nt get to do
as much big stunts on these films but it is always cool to work on them
especially when you get to be a part of a big franchise like Fast and
Furious.
Any other current movies and future projects
you'd like to talk about? I also am a part of a steampunk
action movie called Aether by Frame 29
Films, it is about a a band of outcasts that defend their homeland from a king obsessed with keeping his
floating city skyborne. We shot the prologue last month and it looks
amazing. All steampunk fans will love this movie.
Also just shot a video promo for Xbox game PayDay 2, I played the
character Clover.
As far as I know, before you
got into stunting, you already had a career as model and actress - so what can you tell
us about those aspects of your career?
Modeling and acting
was my segue into stunts and action acting. I have been painted over
300 times and done over 80 photoshoots. I loved modeling for famous
artists (Joe Jusko, Dorian Cleavenger, Mike James, Greg Hildebrandt, Age
etc.) and acting in horror films. I still do acting in horror films now
but usually asked to do stunts with it too. Can you still
remember your first time in front of a movie or TV camera, and what was
that experience like? Yes, it was on Freakshow. I
played a young witch who committed suicide. I was a little nervous but
really enjoyed the experience of movie making.
What made you pick up doing stunts
and stunt coordination eventually? I was already acting and
did some soul searching, and between my love of martial arts and my
uncle, Dusty, who did live stunt shows in the 60s and 70s, the answer
became apparent and I began to pursue stunts.
You're
also a fire eater, right? So how does one even get into something like
this?
I saw a beautiful dancer eat fire and decided that I
had to learn how to do it as well. I asked around and found a local
performer who taught me. Any other talents of yours you'd like to share? I
do aerial hoop, hula hoop, static trapeze, stilts, and jam rollerskater. Stunt
people, actresses, whoever else who inspire you? Many
people inspire me but my top two would be Sandy Gimpel, she is a
stuntwoman/ actress in her 70s and still killing it. And Heidi
Moneymaker, she is one of the top stuntwomen especially when it
comes to fights. Your
favourite movies?
