Your upcoming movie Demon Huntress - in a few words,
what's it about?
Well, in a nutshell, it’s about a woman whose life is falling apart, who
finds herself the target of demonic twins who want to possess her soul.
But with the help of an immortal demon-fighting priest, she’s given the
power to fight demons. The question is, will she accept that vocation for the rest of her life?
What were your sources of inspiration when dreaming up Demon
Huntress? Well, last year I put out my first feature film in like a decade, which
was Jim Haggerty‘s Unnatural Causes. I hadn’t done a film in so long, and
a big part of me thought it might be my last film, just to do one more
film. However, the experience of making it, coupled with how happy I was
with the final product and how much I enjoyed working with the cast and
crew made me realize I’ve got some more movies in me, and wanted to jump
back into making another movie right away. I wanted to do a full story
rather than another anthology this time because I didn’t want it to be
compared to the last movie. I had a couple of story ideas, but this one excited me because - I know
this sounds ambitious - I envision it as a trilogy, to have this
demon-killing heroine, and this be the origin story to kick it off.
Do talk about Demon Huntress's approach to horror!
Well, there’s a lot more supernatural elements this time than probably in
any of my previous films. I guess I usually don’t explore stuff like that,
but I thought it all worked here. Most films - especially horror films -
boil down to being about good versus evil. And when you bring devils and
demons into it, what’s more good versus evil than that?
A few words about your overall directorial approach to your story
at hand? Well, I think my approach is the way my approach generally is, which is
kind of a collaborative effort. I like to give my actors and even the crew
some input on doing things. I like to listen to, and even solicit their
thoughts and opinions. It’s not filmmaking by committee, obviously,
ultimately I have the final say, but I never like to be so stubborn that I
don’t listen to suggestions because sometimes people have very good
suggestions. And with the people I’m working with today, they’re all so
talented and have such good insights, I really do enjoy getting their
input.
What can you tell us about Demon Huntress's cast,
and why exactly these people?
Well, the cast are mostly the same people from
Unnatural Causes, and I
cannot say enough about how wonderful they are. I had such a great
experience on that movie I really wanted to work with the same people.
Obviously, as it was not an anthology there were fewer roles, so I didn’t
have parts for everyone, and a couple of people I asked had conflicts and
couldn’t make it work, but the vast majority of the cast is the same, and
they’re incredible. Stacey Brooke has been working with me since
From the Inside, which is like
over 20 years ago, and it’s always a pleasure to work with her. She’s such
a sweetheart and a great actress. Definitely one of my favorite muses. She
and Jen Elyse Feldy are both actresses from movies I’ve made before
Unnatural Causes. Then there’s the people I met doing
Unnatural Causes - Bec Fordyce, Justin
Levine and Tom Ciociari, they are so good, so amazingly talented, all of
them. Working with people of their caliber - and this goes for the whole
cast - really brings my game up and elevate the material I write to
something really next level. So happy with my cast.
A few words about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?
The shoot has fallen into place easier than any film I’ve ever worked on,
and I worked on quite a few. I think the last major shooting day we were a
little overloaded and had to do a couple of pick ups, but outside of that,
it’s just fallen together so naturally, everything looks and sounds so
good. We’ve had a lot of good luck, and everyone gets along. It’s been a
lot of fun making it. From what I know, Demon Huntress isn't finished yet - so
at what stage of production are you now, and what's the schedule? And any
idea when and where your movie might be released yet?
Well, we’ve completed our major shooting days, there’s a few pick ups and
second unit stuff we have to bang out in the next week or two, but it’s
mostly done. And I’m extremely proud of it. Hoping to at least have it
ready for a premiere by Halloween. Anyone that’s followed my stuff knows
that that’s insanely quick for me, probably insanely quick for anybody,
but it just fell so nicely into place.
Any future projects beyönd Demon Huntress you'd like to
talk about? Well, as soon as we’re done with this, I’d like to keep the momentum going
and do a second
Unnatural Causes, three new stories and a lot of the same
people playing different characters. Then maybe next year we’ll dive into
the second Demon Huntress movie. I’m also writing a sci-fi movie, and I
have a gross-out comedy idea. It’s been floating around my head for a long
time, but my girlfriend Cathy hates the idea. (Laughs.)

Don’t currently have a website, you can find me on Facebook under Jim

Anything else you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten
to ask? No, I think that pretty much covers it. And if I ever find a guitar player
in the area, I can’t wait to get back to recording and playing with my
band Drunken Frankenstein. But right now I’ve got my hands full (laughs).
Thanks for the interview!
Thank YOU, Michael!
