Tori (Scarlet Red) and Marvin (J.R. Ritcherson) |
Your
new movie All American Bikini Car Wash
- in a few words, what is it about, and what can you tell us about your
character in it?
The movie is about 3 guys who
open a carwash in order for Jack to pass his business class.
Marvin is the “brains”
behind the operation. He’s quirky, nerdy, very smart and just an all
around good guy. He may seem like just this nerdy guy, but he’s actually
one of the better friends you could have. He’s in charge of all the
numbers/calculations and is the one who makes sure everything is all good
with the accounting books. His motive for wanting to open the carwash is
to finally win the heart of the girl of his dreams, Tori.
What did you draw upon to bring
your character to life, and how much of you can we find in him, actually?
I’m sure we’ve all done
crazy things to win the heart of someone we loved, so I just thought back
on things I’ve done to get the attention of a girl. I tried to really
embrace his points of view and really understand his motives for doing the
things he did. I think we are similar in that were are both smart, fun and
easy-going guys. I definitely brought my humor and energy to Marvin.
How did you get involved with
the project in the first place?
I submitted myself and had a
couple auditions and then got the call that I got the part!
Do talk about the shoot as such,
and the on-set atmosphere?
The shoot was awesome! The
first week of shooting was in Vegas. We all took a road trip from LA to
Vegas and stayed in a hotel together. I thought it was great to be
shooting the Vegas scenes first, because it really helped build the
chemistry of the cast because, we were away from home and only had each
other to rely on. The on-set atmosphere was great. We were friends
on-camera as well as off. It felt like a mini family. We’d hang out off
set, get food and play card games at the hotel.
Any future projects you'd like
to share?
Currently filming a short
film The Bully and The Boy, a new play called Captive in October and will be filming the indie film
The Door is a Jar in January.
What got you into acting in the
first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

My dad’s in advertising and
marketing, so I did my first commercial with him at age 11 and was hooked
after that. I started doing community theatre during the summer and school
plays before moving to New York to study at The
New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and I eventually received my
BFA in acting at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. After college I moved to Minnesota to work for the touring children’s theatre
company Climb Theatre where I
performed shows on bullying and respect at k-12 schools. It was here where
I gain my first professional experience and where I felt I grew and
learned a lot about acting.
What can you tell us about your
filmwork prior to All American Bikini Car Wash?
Before this movie among
others I was in Life of a King with Cuba Gooding jr as well as indie films
My Senior Year, The Hunter and the Hunted and The
Body of Real Things, as well as playing the title character in the
short film Horse about the cousin of boxing legend Sugar Shane Mosley.
Actors (and indeed actresses)
who inspire you?
Denzel Washington, Will Smith
and Leonardo DiCaprio are guys that inspire me because of their individual
greatness and creativity, especially Denzel and Will for what they are
doing for other black actors.
Your favourite movies?
Classics like The
Dark Knight, The Departed,
Training Day.

else?
