Paul (Stephen Twardokus) and Stella (Liesel Kopp) move into their first
house together, a house that was supposed to be a murder scene and is said
to have been haunted ever since. Stella isn't entirely happy that her
house was once the scene of a gruesome murder, but she likes the place as
such. And Paul ... he just loves to live in a potentially haunted house
because he wants to write a book about his experiences - after all, he's
already 30, and he's got nothing he has achieved in his life, and he
thinks writing this book will be just what he needs to kickstart his
career as a writer. However, the first night Paul witnesses no paranormal
occurances at all. Stella though does - nothing utterly tangible though,
only cupboards opening by themselves, chairs moving mysteriously behind
her back and the like. Well, needless to say, Stella is freaked out and
wants to move out on the spot. Not so Paul, who persuades her to stay ...
but the next morning, she's gone back to her mother's, and Paul, instead
of abandoning the house right then and there to save their relationship,
breaks up with her to continue writing on his book. Paul's paranormal
investigations if you will are only a slow process though, because at
first, the ghosts, if there are any, hardly at all show themselves, and if
then in little ... we might call it gestures, that may be attributed to
something completely else though. But there are signs that things are not
right around the house, for example Paul's landlord (Jon Gale), a very big
guy who doesn't seem to scare easily, feels some sort of unease inside the
house, the former tenants who Paul wants to talk to about the house refuse
to say a word, and the one who does talk (Wendy Haines) seems to be a
complete madwoman - objectively speaking, but comparing his own
experiences in the house her claims somehow make sense ... and her
warnings couldn't be clearer, only Paul ignores them ... And then, the
ghost of the house does strike ... A nice and nicely thought
through ghost story that invariably puts atmosphere over overblown effect
work (in fact there's hardly any actual "special effect" in this
film) and that moves along at a deliberately relaxed speed to help its
story develop and build up tension rather than spinning out of control way
too soon, only to culminate in a scary-as-hell finale. And the whole thing
also profits from a very good cast and a subtle directorial effort as well
of course. Recommended, actually!
