Serving his country in Afghanistan has left veteran Danny (Luke
McQullain) shell-shocked, an accident that has almost killed his son
(Manco O'Connor) has led to his wife (Jade Jordan) divorcing him and
filing for sole custody of the kid, and futher bad luck has rendered him
homeless. And then he meets Will (Daniel Fee), a young man of around 20
who's homeless like him and he's gotten on the wrong side of gangster boss
Power (Aidan Gillen) and his gang. Now this should spell trouble for Danny
and ought to send him running, but somehow he has taken for Will - and
vice versa - but he decides to help him instead. So he tries to reason
with Power, then threaten him, but he has clearly underestimated Power's
psychotic and quite violent tendencies, and that crossed with Will being a
young hotheadis nothing but a powder keg waiting to go off, with Danny
caught in the crossfire ...
Now I freely admit, Amongst the Wolves starts a bit on
the slow side, leaning heavily towards the social drama side that tries to
make an often-made point yet again - but this really makes sense once the
gangster elements set in as it gives the film roots in realism rarely
witnessed in genre fare, realism that of course also makes the plot more
relatable. And fortunately this is not given up in the action-heavy third
act, with the fights all coming across as extra-dirty and un-staged rather
than just going for same-old-same-old. And add to this a very able cast,
and you've got yourself a very worthwhile movie indeed. Amongst
the Wolves will be available on UK digital platforms from June 2nd,
2025.
