Jeremy (Jeremy Schuetze), a struggling filmmaker, invites his girlfriend
Antonia (Antonia Thomas) and his best friend Matt (Matt Visser) and Matt's
girlfriend Jesse (Jesse Stanley) to his (deceased) grandfather's cabin
deep in the woods for a bit of partying - oh, and to shoot a movie, which
is why he brings a camera man (Ben Gulliver) and a sound fuy (Alonso
Lizano Arellano) along for the ride. At first, he claims it's just a
documentary about Antonia, an up-and-coming young actress, but secretly he
wants to turn this trip into a horror movie, which is why he starts
playing sick pranks on the others, like hiding a dead cat in the freezer.
Thing is, eventually things spiral out of control when Jesse starts
sleepwalking, speaking in strange tongues and eventually suffering a
seizure. But things come to a head when Jeremy insists on a hike to a
haunted crypt deep in the woods, and his schemes of manipulation get the
friends into actual danger ... Now I've never been and will never be
the biggest fan of the found footage approach, as it all too often feels
more like a short cut than an actual creative choice. However,
Anacoreta properly embeds the technique into the narrative as it
is about an obsessive filmmaker actually making a found footage film. And
sure, the film would have profited from more cinematic editing and
camerawork, but on the other hand it's nicely structured, doesn't rely on
improvised dialogue (a letdown of many a found footage film) and the
performances are all solid. So in all, this has turned out to be a really
nice genre ride for sure. |
