And Now for Something Completely Different is not actually a
feature film as such but rather a Best of-collection of the first
two seasons of the instant cult comedy series Monty Python's Flying
Circus, with many if not all of the sketches re-filmed to fit the
bigger screen.
The film includes such classic skits as How Not to be Seen, The
Funniest Joke on Earth, Upperclass Twit of the Year, Vocational
Guidance Councelor (the one with the liontamer), Expedition to the
Two Kilimanjaros, The Lumberjack, The Dirty Fork and of
course the Parrot Sketch, all held together by John Cleese popping
up in the most unlikely places and saying "And now for something
completely different."
In direct comparison, And Now for Something Completely Different
is not quite as good as the series, it seems rather incoherent while
episodes of the series often featured a theme that held everything
together or a running gag and at times even a proper story while the film
is just a collection ... but that said, the movie is still nothing short
of hilarious, a collection of sketches that combine surrealism, social and
political satire and utter nonsense, with the occasional sight gag thrown
in, sketches that often deliberately lack proper punchlines and are all
the funnier for it ... so of course, if you have the choice, watch the
whole series, even if it might take a day or so, but if you just happen to
sumble across this little film, just watch it for your own good ...
