Paranormal researcher Emilie Price (Kate Marie Davis) has been
searching for proof for the paranormal for years now - with little
success, but now she receives a bunch of files from a rogue police worker
(Keiron Hollett) that are supposed to change that. However, Emilie isn't
one to be easily convinced, and even though the portion of the two
researchers (Cain Harrip, Dion Cavallaro - segment Tape 26) in the
Australian outback tracking down a demon to realize they have become the
demon's prey, and the one about the mum and son (Kelly Hylton, Chad Hylton
- segment Cemetery) staking out a supposedly haunted cemetery to
find out it's actually haunted and they're at the mercy of an urban
legend, both look properly convincing, they might be anything from an
elaborate hoax to crude trickery, really. The third video in the files
though (The Haunted House of Karl Hendry) is something else: It's
about a man, Karl Hendry (Nathan Head) pretty much making a video log of
his life, with the focus of moving to his new home. The new house seems to
be really great, and Karl especially falls for the vast attic - and the
lovingly crafted yet unfinished dollhouse he finds up there - a dollhouse
that scares him shitless when he finds a wooden doll in it what hasn't
been there before. When his neighbours (Dayna Shuffle, Paul Sutton) tell
him his house was the former home to a witch whose daughter had
disappeared one day, that doesn't especially calm Karl down, and he soon
is sure he hears noises, maybe even voices, from upstairs. He is
determined though to find out what's going on - and that might be exactly
the wrong decision ... Genre icon Suzi Lorraine has a voice-cameo as a
librarian. Apparition of Evil, one of the very few found
footage anthologies (though the framing story is not shot found footage
style), is a film that's very clever in its approach to both its found
footage and horror aspects: After featuring two (rather well-made and
creepy in their own right) rather "traditional" paranormal
research films to set up the tone, The Haunted House of Karl Hendry
is a pleasantly deceiving little film as it leaves one in the dark about
its threat to the end (and delivers a great punchline to the framing
story), it's nicely paced, doesn't go for too much spectacle but rather
atmosphere, and its beautifully carried by Nathan Head. In all, a
positively creepy affair, and especially the third episode is set to charm
even people not too fond of the found footage subgenre.
