Ruby Knowby (Lucy Lawless) has just given birth to some demon that's
somehow also Ash's (Bruce Campbell) offspring, and now she drives to Ash's
hometown to, in the guise of a mild mannered teacher, get on the good side
of Ash's new-found daughter Brandy (Arielle Carver-O'Neill) - as if she
kills all of Ash's bloodline, her own demon son will become the chosen
one. Ash meanwhile tries to be a good father to Brandy - and fails
miserably. But he knows that because he's the chosen one, all of his
offspring will be in danger - so he heads down to the local sperm bank
where he regularly donated, to inquire about his bloodline ... and donate
some more, just out of habit. However, the head of the sperm bank (Helene
Wong) has already been turned into a deadite, and it isn't long before she
attacks ...
Now while this is somewhat of an improvement over the season
opener, it's still a far cry from the series' glory days, in
particular because this episode feels both like a prolonged set-up for
things to come, and a monster-of-the-week episode, with the sperm bank a
pretty much interchangeable location. In other words, this episode lacks
narrative urgency that both seasons one and two had throughout. And of
course, it doesn't help that series regulars Ray Santiago and Dana
DeLorenzo are kept on the sidelines of this story, so the thing lacks the
series' typical ensemble feel.
