To return his friend Pablo (Ray Santiago), who was cut in half last
episode, back to life, Ash (Bruce Campbell) decides to travel back
in time to where it all started (in the original Evil
Dead), to prevent his former self from ever reading from the
Necronomicon, and while Kelly (Dana
DeLorenzo) thinks it's a horrible idea, Ruby Knowby (Lucy Lawless) weirdly
enough proves complicit, even reads the spell from the Necronomicon that's
now of course imprinted on Pablo's dead body. Back at the cabin in 1982,
it's not long before Ash and company have to realize everything's not
alright, and while Kelly and Ruby, getting separated from Ash, are
attacked by a try when strolling through the woods, Ash finds a woman
chained up in the cabin's basement, Henrietta (Alison Quigan), wife of
Professor Knowby (Nicholas Hope), who is to bring the Necronomicon to the
cabin in the first place. Henrietta somehow persuades Ash to set her free
- and then turns into a deadite (played by Ted Raimi) almost immediately,
attacking Ash as well as Professor Knowby and his student Tanya (Sara
West). But on the plus side, the Professor has brought the Necronomicon
...
Of course, all of Ash vs. Evil Dead is a throwback
series, but this episode even more so, not only because it returns to
where it all began and features imagery reminicent of the original Evil
Dead, but also thanks to its inclusion of grotesque monsters, all
practically created, that seem to come directly out of any number of 1980s
creature features. Quite apart from that, this one also has its fair share
of slapstick that seems to stem right from Evil
Dead 2, all of which make this one a fun ride indeed.
