Actors of both sexes are auditioned for a softcore sex flick by a
director hiding behind a one-way mirror in two sets - a French bedroom and
a midieval torture chamber -, for three categories, sexiest actor alive,
sexiest actress alive, and best speciality act. The auditions follow
pretty much the expected script: The performers are asked to tell about
their sexual secrets, adventures and preferences, are asked to script, and
on occasion are asked to masturbate. This is not true for the speciality
acts - even if they sometimes do anyways. Some of the boys and girls are
shy, some obvious exhibitionists, and some just downright strange (to the
point of bringing a gun to the audition). There is also a self-proclaimed
agent (Bob Staats). who interrupts the sessions at random times to just
walk in and praise his newest client of an ever changing array.
At the end of each day, the best performers are chosen and asked to
perform in a group scene (usually threeway), before the very best
applicants are chosen in a big orgy ...
Though the title card at the beginning of Auditions
claims this is a depiction of actual softcore porn auditions and the
performers didn't know they were being filmed, this is nothing of the
sort, as some of the actors are too obviously struggling through their
scripted dialogue or are just too eccentric to be for real. That said,
while superficially the movie is about little more than showing as much
naked flesh as humanly possible, it tries to do so on a light note, and
does at least try to outbalance its sleazy bits by junks of intentional
humour, and by throwing in speciality acts - just like in striptease shows
of old. This all makes Auditions no masterpiece of course, not
even especially good - but it's an entertaining piece of yesteryear's
softcore porn nevertheless, a fun trip down the seedy side of memory lane.
