Adam (Ryan Jamison), Randy (Trevor Adolf) and Jonathan (Josh Tevlin)
are best friends for life - but then they are confronted by a guy (Bryan
Dury) who tells them "Roger knows you", then leaves
... and at first they can't make heads or tails of it until the guy shows
up again to tell them Roger (Darren Kristensen) knows a dirty secret about
each of them, and if two of them will not gang up to rat out the dirty
secret to the persons involved, evidence of all three's dirty stories will
be revealed. The three friends try to come up with scheme after scheme to
get out of this unscathed, but while Randy has to step out, Adam has the
idea to rat him out ... upon which Randy and Jonathan just throw him out.
Overcome by guilt, Adam tracks down Roger, breaks into his place to
destroy whatever evidence he might have ... and finds Randy and Jonathan
there, and when they find out he was willing to risk everything to destroy
the evidence, just like they did, they welcome him back with open arms -
but unfortunately, one of Roger's henchmen has spotted them on the
premises ... To be quite clear here, The Big Conspiracy
is much less a thriller my synopsis might make it sound to be but much
more of a comedy, that despite its high school settings, young
protagonists and post-modern film score relies on puns, sight gags and
bits of slapstick much more than gross-out humour and in-your-face
funniness that's more predominant in today's comedies, which actually
makes it somewhat reminiscent of the Marx
Brothers of the Three
Stooges, which is a very welcome change from much of today's
fare - and while admittedly not all the jokes hit their mark, and the
comic timing is not 100% there all of the time, one has to take into
account that the kids involved (also behind the camera) are all incredibly
young, do achieve quite a bit not only for their age, and show lots of
promise. Definitely worth a look to say the least!
