Becky is engaged to Tom, an army officer from a rich family. Thing is,
Becky is poor, and her mom is even poorer ... and Tom wants to bring his
parents around to meet Becky's mom. So Mom has a great idea: Why not move
into one of the best suites of the hotel she works at as a chambermaid and
act as if she owns the place ... and wouldn't you know it, the plan even
seems to work, even if it includes to tie up a desk clerk and the manager
of the woman who normally lives in the suite and lock them in the
wardrobe.
Eventually though, the singer in whose room mom pretends to reside
turns up at the doorstep - but after she has been explained everything,
she feels sympathetic to Becky's cause and puts up a show with her gang of
musician to impress Tom's parents, a show during which Becky and her
mother are also allowed to sing.
At the end of course, the whole thing is revealed to be a charade after
all, but by that time, becky has already won the hearts of Tom's parents,
and Tom is happy that Becky is not just another high society tart ...
The Big Timers is actually a revue featurette with an all-black
cast and a variety of all-black musician. Consequently, the plot that
holds the whole thing together is pretty feeble, a bit underdeveloped and
not as funny as it should/could have been. That said, at least the musical
performances are pretty solid and make the film somewhat worthwhile after
all.
