Sean (Connor Jessup) is different, he dresses different (goth), hears
dark music, has dark thoughts, hates most of humanity, has access to
weapons, and he writes a very dark blog, in which he talks about having
revenge on those who have wronged him - even if in the form of short
stories ... but that's enough evidence for the police to search his house
and arrest him on charges of threatening the life of others -
despite the fact that Sean's only 16 - allegedly to avoid another
Columbine massacre. And even without concrete evidence he's put to
juvenile prison to await trial ... There's another side to this story
though, fact is that for the longest time, Sean had been the bullied kid
in school, because he doesn't look and act like the others and isn't a
jock - which seems to especially offend the hockey team who love to gang
up on him and rough him up. And yet, he's best friends with Deanna (Alexia
Fast), the girlfriend of the captain of the hockey team Cory (Craig
Arnold) - but she's keeping their friendship a secret because she wants to
be the popular girl, and Sean might drag her down. But then Cory does find
out, and that's the day Sean's arrested ... In juvenile prison, Sean's
bullied just the same, especially by a guy called Trevor (Alex Ozerov), so
much so that he eventually, against his better knowledge, accepts a plea
deal rather than go to trial. After that, Sean is a free man but on
probation, and he is to stay away from his school and from certain
persons, including Deanna. However, staying away from Deanna is the one
thing he can't do, and even if it becomes clear that she has not only
forgiven him but feels remorse over not having done more for him to keep
him out of jail, and quickly falls in love with him, this gets him back
into jail ... but this time he's in with a different attitude ... Blackbird
is an at times heart-warming, at times heart-breaking drama about teenage
angst, bullying and high school shootings that above all else gets one
thing right: Dark thoughts don't result in dark deeds, and the real threat
is often not the guy who looks most likely but the "most
popular" kid at school - as a result, confirmity doesn't make you a
good person if you conform with assholes, doing the right thing does. All
this though is not conveyed to the audience in a preachy way but told as a
moving drama with plenty of action, of meanness, of interesting turns to
keep one interested, and a competent ensemble cast really carries the
movie. Quite a good one, actually!
