A movie that promises to show us the uniqueness of "black
love" - and so it starts with explaining how black kids learn about
lovemaking: Mostly by innocently getting a peek of black people making
love or at least a sneak peek at a pantiless black woman's vagina or
The second section shows black people dancing, just to show
they come in all forms and sizes, and, as the movie is quick to assert,
hairdos. Eventually, these black people on the dancefloor are naked - or
at least "the camera shows them naked", as we're assured.
They're still dancing, mind you, no sex going on.
Finally, there are a
few scenes of black men seducing black women, with the narrator explaining
all the positions away ad nauseam, insisting that it is these positions
(basically missionary, cowgirl, doggie, 69) that make black love special -
which leaves one unsure how white people do it then ;)
Love is Herschell Gordon Lewis' only ever hardcore porn flick, and -
intentionally or not - it's a laugh riot, basically because it's
conceptualized and structured like a documentary, but has indeed very
little to say about its subject (at least in my experience, the black love
depicted varies in no way from the "white love" I've enjoyed)
and is of course a poor excuse to show couples having sex (and a fun fact
is that the narrator invariably assures us the couples are actually
married), accompanied by overly serious and overly factual (or shall we
say factoid), in total contrast to the on-screen goings-on. And while some
scenes show people actually having sex (with on-screen penetration and
all, but no cum-shots), others are obviously simulated (and not even
convincingly so) with a few close-ups of penetration thrown in for good
In other words, it's a piece of porn that's certainly not all
that stimulating (which isn't the performers' fault mind you) ... but it's
such a hoot to watch for all the wrong reasons!
