Candy (Dory Devon) and her air-headed sister Sugar (Suzy Mandel) are
two nightclub performers, performing in some dead end dump, somewhere in
the middle of nowhere, Midwest USA - until they get the chance to travel
to New York City, courtesy of English nobleman Stephen (Eric Edwards), who
has taken a particular liking in Candy. He allows them to stay in his
Manhattan apartment while he's off back to England, and Sugar and Candy
are starting to look for jobs in showbusiness - but at first, the only
road that's open to them is porn, and even there, Sugar is clumsy enough
to spoil many of their opportunities. But even without porn, the girls get
lots of cock. Back in England, Stephen's aunt Sybil (Molly Malone) takes
the girls for golddiggers and tries to force them out of Stephen's life,
using every trick in the book. Then though it's found out that Sugar has
by mistake come into the possession of a brooch owned by Sybil, and when
Sybil comes to get it and have the girls arrested, Sugar has already
passed it on to a gay neighbour of hers (Kurt Mann). It all leads to a
finale in a gay club with the girls doing a fake transvestite act, a night
in jail for everyone, Sugar marrying a stableboy-turned-millionair (David
Morris), and finally aunt Sybil paying the girls their own Broadway show -
after all, now that they have struck it rich, they have become a good
investment ... Probably the epitomy of porn-gone-mainstream,
this film has it all: A spirited script, funny dialogue, (intentionally)
hilarious performances, high production values, a decent directorial
effort accompanied by a clever editing job, and a carefully kept balance
between narrative filmmaking and explicit sex scenes - and it's a very
enjoyable film, too ... and yet, only few films followed Blonde
Ambition's example, probably because mainstream audiences were still
not ready to admit liking to see hardcore sex, and hardcore movies with
less narrative frills were easier and cheaper to film without cutting too
much into the returns. And thus, Blonde Ambition stands out as a
successful yet failed experiment of blending the mainstream with the
sleazy, and a great and sexy document from a bygone era of erotic cinema.
