1966: Vampire are roaming Japan, but fortunately, a top secret
organisation has taken it upon itself to chase them down, and the top
operative of this organisation is Saya, a girl who looks as innocent as
she is cold as ice, she is skillful as can be, and she only respects one
moral code - to not kill any humans (which can be a tad tricky sometimes). Eventually,
Saya's organisation tracks down the last vampires in all of Japan to a
high school within an American military base, and duting a Halloween
party, Saya is supposed to hunt them down and kill them - but the fact
that everybody finds it hilarious to dress up as vampires complicates
matters, as does the fact that the two vampires seem to be innocent
schoolgirls, the fact that Saya's weapon of chice, a samurai sword, breaks
in battle, and that she suddenly finds herself burdened with the school
nurse. Adn when yet another vampire pops up out of nowhere, that doesn't
help either. However, in an eplosive finale that also involves an army
plane, Saya manages to rid Japan of all vampries, then it's off to
Vietnam, where someone has found it a good idea to start a war. The school
nurse in the meantime is left behind to make heads or tails of the whole
story.
Simply judging by its looks, Blood: The Last Vampire is mighty
impressive: The character and background designs are nothing short of
wonderful, hand-drawn and CGI animation are blended with panache, and the
director quite obviously had an eye for atmosphere. Furthermore, the whole
thing is perfectly paced and the action staged rather impressively. ...
and yet, Blood: The Last Vampire is a less than perfect film,
basically because it's plot is too straight-forward, almot totally lacks
any twists and turns and ultimately comes across as disappointingly plain.
That's not to say the film is bad as a whole it's still fun, it just could
have been better.
