On his death bed, his father the reverend (Julian Glover) tols Henry
(Corneille Dion Williams) that the ghost stories about their home, Broley
Rectory, were actually true and it's now upon him, the men of the house
and also the new reverend, to protect his mother (Patsy Kensit) and
sisters (Jesss Inchbald, Charlotte Luxford, Lora Hristova, Jenna N.
Wilson) from the local spooks. Henry promises his dad to do so, but he's a
modern man and
thus not much for believing in ghosts - and for the next 12 yearshe's
totally on the money, too, no hauntings to be reported. But then his
sisters see a ghostly nun (Samantha Anderson) on the premises, who later
also appears to various members of the family inside the house. But she
doesn't really do anything, other than being slightly creepy. It's mnother
though, who's the most sceptic about the whole story, with whom the nun
tries to communicate, and she learns the nun's story, whe was who knows
when beaten to death by a priest (Lee Brown), who has previously raped
her. And now she''s doomed to relive her death ofer and over. It becomes
clear that something needs to be done, but Henryis still hesitant to gve
up his disbelief, so his sister Kitty (Jess Inchbald) takes matters into
her own hands and calls upon a reverend and exorcist whom her father had
shared the story, Shaw (Simon Phillips) to help them get rid of the spook.
Unfortunately the only way to do that Shaw knows about is a mighty
dangerous one that involves demonic possession ... Borley
Rectpry: The Awakening is an in the best meaning of the word
old-fashioned ghost story, with all the right ingredients, a moody old
manor, vintage costumes and props, a directorial effort more focussed on
creating a creepy atmosphere than to rely on fireworks - and director
Steven M. Snutg does a good job in this department, too. And add to this a
very able ensemble cast playing well fleshed-out characters, and you're
left with a pretty cool piece of horror cinema.
