Another entity is haunting the premises of Sunnydale High, this time an
invisible whatever, attacking especially those close to the popular, cute but
bitchy Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), who is just preparing to be crowned May
Queen: Her current boyfriend (Ryan Bittle) is attacked by his own baseball bat,
hjer best friend Harmony (Mercedes McNab) is pushed down some stairs, & her
English teacher (Denise Dowse) almost suffocated by a plastic bag.
This makes even Cordelia turn to Buffy, Vampire Slayer (Sarah Michelle
Gellar) - whom she thinks is rather off the hook - for help. & Buffy, her
mentor Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) & her friends Xander (Nicholas Brendon)
& Willow (Alyson Hannigan) soon take up investigations & at first
suspect something supernatural - either telekinesis or a poltergeist -, but
soon it turns out they are dealing with an actual invisible girl, poor
unpopularMarcie (Clea DuVall) who was ignored by ever-popular Cordelia, &
now wants revenge - but it turns out she was ignored by everyone else too, even
Xander & Willow, who each took 4 classes with her without even noticing, so
after a time, her invisibility took over.
In the end, as the crowning point of her revenge, Marcie has Giles, Xander
& Willow locked into the school's cellar & wants to gas them (they are
evnetually saved by Angel [David Boreanaz], though), while having both Buffy
& Cordelia tied to chairs. She already prepares her surgical knives to
disfigure Cordelia when Buffy frees herself, &, after having a few setbacks
in fighting an invisible enemy, gives her a sound beating.
In the end though, 2 FBI-agents (Mark Phelan, Skip Stellrecht) drag Marcie
off to be trained as an international assassin ...
The best episodes of Buffy work because they are a carefully
balanced blend of horror & high school drama, all infused with a good dose
of humour. In this episode though, both horror & humour take a backseat,
letting a verya mediocre high school drama unfold that is just too clichéd to
work on any level, 6 the supernatural elements seem to be just glued on tobe
aligned with the show - they just might come off any minute though. Even the
surprise ending, when Marcie is trained to be an assassin does come as anything
but a surprise as it is forshadowed about halfway through the show.
