Moon seems to be a typical teeenager, even if her classmates don't like
her too much because she's a bit flat-chested & ... weird. Eventually
she falls in love with Hyland, who works in the toystore directly opposite
her appartment, & she spends long hours watching him through her
binoculars, & sometimes even visits the incompetent presentations of
improbable gimmicks he does out on the street to promote the store.
Problem with Hyland is, he hates to be touched, & goes out of his way
not to be ...
One day, when Moon saves a ladybug, Cootchie, from certain death she
realizes she can talk to insects ... which soon gets her the
attentions of the kids from Ultra Park, where youngsters with superhuman
abilities (the usual: x-ray vision, telepathy & the like) gather &
train. Moon is invited by Ultra Park's leader Auntie to join, but she
refuses ...
Auntie - who knows more than she is telling - desperately wants he rto
join though, so she gets Hyland - whose ability to dodge people who want
to touch him is not quite human in itself - to join instead ... &
before long, Moon is with the Ultras as well.
Soon though, Moon's bug friends, which she carries with her in a cage
everywhere, are in everybody's way, & eventually she is seperated
fromthe bugs 6 they are set free ... all but Cootchie, who seems to have
been sqashed by an insect collector.
Now the leader of the bugs is furious, & decides that all the
insects go on strike & refuse to fulfill their place in the food chain
... which alone could lead to desaster. But eventually the insects really
declare war on the humans, & the Ultras, who try to form a resistance
see they are hopelessly outnumbered ... when Cootchie suddenly shows up.
Turns out he wasn't killed after all, the insect collector had only
squashed one of his specimen's that looked a bit like Cootchie.
But the bug's leader is so in the mood for war that the simple fact
that the reason for his war is gone doesn't dissuade him (a bit like Iraq,
isn't it). But before the insects can make good their attack, Auntie
throws a glass of honey into the mix ... which the insects decide they
like much more than war - especially Cootchie, who falls in & almost
drowns in the honey. But once again, Moon saves his life, & seeing
that, the insects immediately change their plans & make peace.
But me Not is a hybrid of teen-flick, superhero film, special
effects film & kitsch opera about talking animals. In a weird way,
this mix sounds promising (at least to me), however, ultimately the film
falls short of its promise, ultimately it all results in a childish,
meaningless fantasy comedy, that never comes into full swing. The
simplistic designs of the bugs are almost endearing though.
