Abbott and Costello want to earn some money in a Middle American
country by performing a magic show ... instead Costello is mistaken for
the president of the country. Then he meets the real president, and each
is calling the other an impostor. Finally, both are put top the test, and
wouldn't you know it, against all odds the test proves that Costello is
the real president ... which was all of course a trick by the (actual)
president's men to employ Costello as the president's new double as
several people plot the president's assassination. What follows is a
sequence of tried and true (but not particularly funny) assassination
jokes.
Some moderately funny jokes can't hide the fact that Abbott and
Costello were just second-rate comedians (especially Abbott, who doesn't
even attempt to be humourous) and by the mid-1950's past their prime, and
many of their sketches which are at first quite amusing are milked dry to
a point where they are only annoying. Most of the prominent guest stars
like Jane Russell and Rhonda Fleming are totally wasted in pointless
musical numbers. The musical number by child xylophonist Baby Mistin
though is nothing short of odd.
