When Jeff (Richard Coyle) sees an amazingly beautiful girl (Anat Dychtwala)
in a bar & she gives him the eye, he tries to chat her up, and, while he
desperately tries to avoid the word breast, he makes a complete fool of
hmself, telling her he collects ears in a bucket ... It is only when the
girl's not so pretty & very flat friend Alice (Ruth Cass) shows up too that
he learns she is from Israel & doesn't speak a word of English ... much to
his relief. The next day, Jeff 6 the girl meet in the bar again, & have a
lengthy conversation ... dspite the factt that neither speaks the first word of
the other's language. But somehow Jeff seems to work out that her name is
Shadaym, & that they have agreed to a date on the next day, when Alice will
be there too as a translator ... or at least that's what jeff thought ... Rewind
to the beginning of their conversation, but now from the girl's point of view -
she thinks Jeff is madly in love with Alice (which he is not at all) &
tells him how frustrated Alice is for not having big breasts. Also Shadaym is
not her name but means breast in Hebrew ... so without knowing it, Jeff ahs
said breast repeatingly in their conversation, & the girl tries to
fix up a date for Jeff & Alice for the next day, but, as she finds him
amazingly cute, invites him to meet up outside in five minutes for you know
what. The next day, Alice meets Jeff in the bar, & Jeff, expecting the
Israeli girl as well, asks her "where's Shadaym ?" (or "Where
are breasts ?", if you may) ... While the concept of having 2
people talk in different languages & completely misunderstand each other
might be called novel, it's rather new or terribly original. It's use in this
episode of Coupling however can be called inspired since it is
perfectly tailored to the character of Jeff - & especially his shortcomings
(up to a point where he is just compelled to say breast to a woman,
whether he knows it or not) - thus making this an intelligent but still
extremely funny story.
