Whitechapel, London, 1888: Victor Frankenstein (Barrett Ogden) is in
the process in creating a living and breathing woman (Victoria Halloran)
out of bodyparts - bodyparts provided by his female "assistant"
Igor (Carlee Baker), who walks the streets of Whitechapel at night
committing the Jack the Ripper murders to keep her master in supply. But
alas, Frankenstein's experiments lead to nowhere, until his erstwhile
mentor Dr Pretorius (Rick Macy) makes a fleeting yet well-placed remark
about every creature needing a heart, which tips Frankenstein off that the
center of a human being might ought to be more than just a clockwork. But
once the creature has a heart, what will she do? And how come Pretorius
has placed his remark quite so conveniently without knowing what
Frankenstein's actually working on? ... Now Creatures of
Whitechapel doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, quite the contrary it
does take busloads of inspiration from the Universal
horror cycle and Hammer
horrors and at the same time embraces more recent steampunk ideas - but
all that works out beautifully thanks to a story that mixes well-known
stories with originality, some directorial wit, a very solid cast, and
really nice sets and props. Totally worth a look, actually!
