A woman without a name (Melanie Denholme) wakes up in a rundown room,
with no idea who she is, how she got here, what she's supposed to do, only
very vague memories of her past, and very little to wear. Soon enough, her
captor, a hooded figure, makes himself known to her, strips her naked and
tells her to perform sexual acts on him. With no idea what's right or
wrong, she agrees to it willingly, and initially seems to enjoy it, too.
It's only by the by that she comes to the realization that she's
exploited, especially when her captor starts to torture and rape her, too.
But while he does so - he claims in honour of Satan, but that might only
be a poor excuse to live out his perversions -, something grows in the
woman that makes her not so much resist him as take control of the
situation more and more - until she's into her own enough to shed her
slave role and become the new master. Upon this, her captor simply
vanishes, and she's free to go out into the world - to spread the medicine
he has taught her to embrace ... Claiming to be about the
titular "dark Satanic Magick", this little piece of twisted
softporn is actually much more about a typical master/slave relationship
with special focus on the power-element in the slave-role. But basically,
the film is owned by Melanie Denholme, not so much because she's got a
gorgeous body and gets naked a lot, but without any dialogue (though tons
of voice-over) she manages to carry the emotions of her character just
beautifully and really keep things moving. Story-wise, the film, with
its very confusing, basic and sex-based narrative, resembles some of the
best erotic pieces the grossly underrated sex film maestro Jess Franco has
shot with his various muses (and it's safe to say that Melanie Denholme is
Aquinas' [real name known to the editor] muse), even if this movie comes
across as somewhat academic and pretentious, while Franco used to really indulge in all
kinds of perversions. But like Franco's best, this is elegantly shot,
favours style over smut in all instances, and does add a dose of
philosophy to all its sexual shenanigans.
