For quite some time now, private eye John (Ed Speleers) has been on
Max's (Joseph Mawle) trail, and now that he has caught up and manages to
corner him, he has to realize Max has taken his wife hostage and is
therefore in a much better bargaining position ... but that said, neither
opponent is much into bargaining, and thus guns are quickly drawn. But
even death might not always be the end of a good story ... Quite
an interesting little movie that for the most part is a film noir bared
down to its bones - inasmuch as it's a fatalistic crime story (or at least
the climax of one) relying more on characters and narrative than action
and not particularly interested in a happy ending - and the film, relying
on strong performances and a tight direction, really manages to bring this
across ... to intentionally not prepare the audience for the film's
coda, which sheds a totally new light on things. Apparently, Deathless
is intended to be a promo-short for a feature of the same name ... and
seeing the short, I can't wait to see what the feature will be like ...
