On their trip through Austrialia, Maya (Jessica Tovey), Amelia (Pippa
Black) and her brother Toby (Tim Pocock) make the acquaintance of locals
Geordie (Tim Phillips) and Oscar (Andrew Ryan), who tell them about a
local urban legend of a guy who was hit crossing a country road and being
run over by partying teens ... and now he has returned as a spirit,
appearing as headlights in the rearview mirror of speeding teens. And
since all of our heroes are in their late teens/early 20s, and in party
mood, they try it out - and indeed see the headlights. But of course,
headlights in the rearview mirror don't mean anything, so they decide to
repeat the experiment, but this time have Oscar as their lookout to see if
it's genuine ... and then Oscar's gone - and later turns up dead in their
trunk and they have no idea how ... and then he disappears again, and they
find Toby hanged, Amelia tied up, and Sam (Nicholas Gunn), a friend of
Geordie and Oscar's, going berzerk, and Maya has some extra-sensory
experience that might lead to the origin of all the horrors, and it's not
above urban legend - but that origin might be much more rooted in the now
than anybody would want it to, and be quite menacing ... Death
Passage is quite a clever little horror flick as it on one side does
tread well-beaten paths - like urban legends turning into real horrors -,
but it has quite a few surprises along the way while keeping the core
horror audience pleasently entertained with well-placed shocks, plenty of
suspense, and tense moviemaking. And add to that a strong cast, plus a
direction that knows when to restrain itself, and you've got yourself a
pretty cool piece of genre cinema. Interesting footnote: Many of the
cast of this movie were recruited from Australian soaps, Nicholas Gunn,
Tim Phillips and Pippa Black all appeared on Neighbours,
while Jessica Tovey starred in Home and Away.
