Returning from New York to Jamaica to take over her deceased father's
plantation, Sylvia (Ida James) is soon subjected to her half-sister
Isabelle's (Nina Mae McKinney) thirst for revenge - she has run the
plantation up to that point & has designs for John (Emmett Wallace),
who in turn loves Sylvia, who is about to be engaged to Ramsey (Jack
Carter). Ramsey however, a small-fry crook, is part of Isabelle's plan
to scare Sylvia off the island & which involves a voodoo ritual, but
John grows wise to it, saving Sylvia in the nick of time. But then it
turns out the ritual was just fake & essentially harmless, &
Ramsey was the real villain.
All-Black movie made on the cheap, & not very good at
that: The messed up story fails to deliver any suspense, which is of
course further hampered by some song-&-dance numbers thrown in
rather deliberately, & the very disappointing ending, robbing the
story of any horror at all, just as it is about to get exciting. The
story was previously filmed in 1935 as Ouanga by George
Terwilliger, a film that at least put a greater emphasis on the
horror-elements. |
