Keith (Stephen Cromwell) and Jay (Daniel Mahoney) take their respective
girlfriends Jennifer (Danielle Keaney) and Katie (Caoimhe Cassidy) on a
camping trip right in the middle of a forest that's supposed to be
haunted, ever since a couple of Satanists have been burned alive there
centuries ago. Of course, the guys don't tell the girls about the forest's
haunted history, not until they are already all set up with their tents
and stuff - but when the girls do find out after all, especially Katie
gets mighty upset, due to a traumatic experience in the past ... so she
and Jennifer decide to play the guys a cruel prank, pretending they are
chased by some evil or someone, to give the guys a good scare. What the
girls don't know though, there really is an evil slasher roaming the woods
for real, and he had already killed six girls of late ... and one by one
he kills them for real, until there's only one left - and (s)he finds out
something terrible ... Now The Devil's Woods is by no
means a film that re-invents the wheel, it's a slasher movie firmly rooted
in the genre formula ... but that doesn't mean it can't be a good shocker,
as it is, suspense and shocks are all well-set, the characters are
likeable in all of their imperfections, and really brought to life by a
solid cast, the Irish landscapes and locations are pretty much
breathtaking, and the whole thing is unusually atmospheric for a slasher. Definitely
worth a watch, not only for die-hard genre fans.
