Sir John (Christopher Benjamin) pretty much forces his
second-in-command Captain Spiker (David Daker) to agree to marry Phyllida
(Julie Dawn Cole), basically because her father Colonel Tranter (Kevin
Brennan) owes him lots of money but the only thing in value the Colonel
has is a priceless necklace bound up in the girl's dowry - and to have
Spiker marry the girl is the only way for him to get his fingers on it.
Thing is, young Nigel's (James Woolley) madly in love with Phyllida and he
would do anything to sweep her off her feet and prove her his love - thing
is though, anything isn't very much in Nigel's case as he's neither all
that brave nor a skilled fighter or swordsman. Luckily then he runs across
highwayman Dick Turpin (Richard O'Sullivan) and his sidekick Swiftnick
(Michael Deeks), who take him under their wing. And they soon work out a
plan for Phyllida to fall for Nigel: Turpin's to pose as Spiker, make a
total fool out of himself, then Nigel swoops in, challenges him to a duel,
and ultimately defeats Turpin-as-Spiker, this way winning the adoration of
borh Phyllida and her dad. This works like a charm until the real Spiker
appears on the scene and exposes the plot - and Nigel very cowardly
hightails it. So Turpin makes up another plan, he and Swiftnick are to rob
the coach Phyllida's taken to Sir John's in and kidnap Phyllida, then
Nigel intervenes and saves the girl. But again, Spiker intervenes as he
arrives at Turpin's before Nigel. And he's already about to shoot Turpin
and Swiftnick dead then Nigel shows up, knocks him out with a plank of
wood, and gets the girl as a thank you.
Not the best Dick Turpin episode plotwise as it
presents Turpin as a mere do-gooder while being entirely made up of genre
tropes. But on the plus side, the cast's playing up the humourous side of
the story and seem to be well enjoying themselves, something that's
infectuous. So in all, a very light but also very fun watch.
