Because she two-timed her boyfriend/manager Al (John King) back in
Harlem a few times too often, showgirl Gertie (Francine Everett) sees
herself forced to relocate to a Caribbean island resort, where she is
welcomed like a regular star. Soon the flirty Harlem native has shook up
the whole island and charmed pretty much everybody but the moral cruzader
Mr. Christian (Alfred Hawkins), who wants to either reform her or throw
her off the island, and who is positively shocked when he sees her sensous
dances on her opening night.
However, her past soon catches up with Gertie, and eventually, Al
manages to track her down in her island paradise - and he shoots her dead
without much ado.
On the plus side, Francine Everett is great in her role, her acting
skills are up to her character's demands, and she looks pretty much as
sexy as she ought to to turn every head (one way or the other) on a small
Caribbean island.
Apart from Francine Everett though, the film suffers pretty much from
the same shortcomings as pretty much all all-black movies of the time,
most of them budget-related (and usually, these films were filmed on a
shoestring): The direction is uninspired and stagey, several scenes would
have vastly profited from re-shoots, sets and costumes are generally
underwhelming, and quite a few performers don't seem to be actors at all.
