Best friends Dakota (James Treick), his sister Chris (C.J. Sibley), her
love interest Cameron (Jon Thompson), loudmouth Chad (Christopher Sugg),
his girlfriend Brandi (Suzie Sugg), Tyler (Junior Alanis) and Renee (Trina
Enloe) go on a roadtrip on Route Nine, right through the middle of
nowhere, USA. But Chad seizes the opportunity to do the Route Nine
Challenge, which is pretty much a series of more or less dangerous,
more or less embarrassing and/or humiliating challenges - from naked
hitchhiking to sleeping on a redneck's land without permission -, for his
fledgling vlog, dreaming of internet fame. What they don't know is that
Route Nine is also the stomping ground of a serialkiller dubbed Dollface
(called so because he wears a doll mask), and out of nowhere he comes and
kills Renee in front of everyone. The others scatter, but Dollface knows
the terrain and tracks them down one by one after sabotaging their car's
engine - and our heroes fall one by one by one ... A rather
enjoyable genre piece that starts out as your typical slasher with slight
comedic overtones (but manages not to give away the identity of the final
girl in the first five minutes), and as such it sure doesn't shy away from
rather violent murders - but instead of just going through the motion, it
turns into pure survival horror in the third act, and it's there where the
film really comes into its own, as once it has made the switch, the
tension picks up considerably and never again lets go, especially since in
the finale the film sure knows how to surprise and not follow any
cookie-cutter pattern. Plus, Dollface's mask is pretty badass in its
simplicity.
