Benji's (Justin Moore) mum (Dana Nelson) was probably never going for
mum of the year awards from early on, she was a shallow chainsmoker
obsessed with her own beauty rather than taking care of him from a very
young age ... until one of the untested beauty products she used actually
killed her. Nowadays, 8 year old Benji lives at his grandma (Kimberly
West-Carroll), who's peddling beauty products like the one that killed
Benji's mum, and the only thing he has that reminds him of his mother is
her extensive doll collection - dolls that he calls his friends and that
speak to him. Unfortunately, an 8 year old boy playing with dolls isn't
exactly the most popular kid in his neighbourhood, so other kids do bully
him. The problem is though, grandma doesn't have his back, she's as
suspicious of his doll fixation as are the other kids, and as abusive, and
the fact that she tries to get her white trash lover (Jay Sosnicki) to
deal with this doesn't actually make things better by a longshot. But
fortunately, Benji's dolls are really his friends, and they talk to him -
but what they are suggesting eventually might lead to carnage ... Even
if this film sounds straightforward in writing, it's much less so on
screen - and that works totally to Dolly Deadly's advantage, making
it less of a predictable shocker and more of a mood piece that allows one
to get more and more into the brain of its troubled protagonist. And the
fact that some of what happens to our protagonist is quite bizarre, plus
the inclusion some surreal dream sequences and fantasies, really make sure
that one remains properly entertained throughout. Really cool movie,
actually!
