After his wife has died in a tragic accident psychiatrist William
(Andrew Sensenig) feels partly responsible for, he gladly accepts a job
offer from a little known Texas sanitarium, just to get away from it all.
At this new sanitarium, the head Emily (Camilla Carr) makes it a point for
him to take care of their new "star patient" Sam (Willie Minor),
a lobotomized man in his 70s who's on the intellectual level of a 10 year
old and whois said to have slaughtered all the other patients and the
personell at another sanitarium some 40 years ago - post lobotomy. It
takes William the longest time to find out more about the backgrounds of
the massacre from back when, and when he does, he doesn't like what he
sees. In the meantime, his colleague Lance tries to steal Sam away from
him, apparently to impress Emily. But what's worse, one of the patients
(Chester Rushing) of the clinic suddenly commits an unprovoked murder even
though he had never shown any such tendencies ... and everybody starts to
act weird to dangerous, including Emily. It seems like things are gearing
up for another massacre like the one 40 years ago, and it's up to William,
Lance, another colleague of theirs, Lucy (Arianne Martin), resolute nurse
Jennifer (Megan Emerick), and the two bumbling orderlies (Scott Tepperman,
Jim O'Rear) to prevent the situation from getting totally out of hand -
thing is, one can never be sure that even some of them are not affected by
whatever it is ... A sequel to Don't Look in the Basement
from over 40 years ago, and directed by that movie's director S.F.
Brownrigg's son and also starring Camilla Carr, Don't Look in the
Basement 2 actually has enough flesh on its bones to stand on its own:
It's well-written and structured, tense in all the right places, with
quite a few funny bits thrown in, the characters are colourful and
likeable, and played by a competent cast, and the finale is sure to pack a
punch and will most certainly surprise you. Sure, the film isn't exactly
the re-invention of the wheel, but few sequels are for that, but in all
it's very cool genre entertainment!
