A Screambox exclusive:
Good
friends Iwan (Adhin Abdul Hakim), Amir (Winner Wijaya), Wati (Anastasia
Herzigova), Ani (Anggi Waluyo) and Budi (played alternately by Ibrahim
Allami and Haydar Salishz) take a trip to a cabin in the woods to party -
a party that comes to an abrupt end when Budi ends up dead. - which is
worrying of course, but the whole set-up, also including the creepy
caretaker (Ernanta Kusuma) of the place, just sounds too much like a
horror movie cliché, which is why Amir, the nerd of the group, soon
figures they actually are in a horror movie. And when Budi shows up alive
(but not for long the very next day, Amir also figures they're not just in
a horror movie but in an early draft of the script. And then zombies
attack, zombies that are sometimes running and sometimes just stumbling,
as the writer apparently isn't sure yet - which gives our heroes plenty of
time to prepare for the onslaught, because as long as the writer's not
ready, they have the advantage over whatever might happen - but what if
the writer finally makes up his mind? So ok, there have been
many self-a´ware horror movies over the years, with
Scream and
Cabin in the Woods beng
the most popular (but by no means the only or earliest) examples - and
yet, The Draft feels very fresh in its approach, as it's more than just
self-aware but also mocks genre tropes and pokes (justified) fun at the
writing process - and the result is something that still works as a horror
movie but at the same time, making the most of an on paper rather bland
story - and ultimately a very fun genre ride.
