Russell T. Bowe (Jamaal Jordan) is a shady businessman who wants to
become senator of the state, and his gimmick is running a driving school
and propagating safe driving. To that end he runs a driving school. Maybe
not the best gimmick, but hey, he runs uncontested, and his message is
sound ... but then a competitor turns up, Osiris Mandell (Michael Everett
Johnson), and even if Osiris hasn't got a problem at all, he's sure to be
trouble, as Russell's driving teachers are ... well, a little
underqualified and less than responsible. There's Rod (Chris Kamsch), an
alcoholic who has lost his own driving license on alcohol charges, Rod's
ex Liz (Kathy Carson) who's addicted to pretty much every pill there is
and can't function without them, and barely even with them, and washed-up
TV "star" and stuntman Jeremy (Rick Miller), who's main claim to
fame it is to have spat Lee Majors into the face a few years back. Well,
these three are certainly not campaigning material, but Russell doesn't
find better people to work with him and at least they are sort of loyal
and reliable - and always willing to cross the line to illegality should
the campaign demand it. Now throw into this mess Rod's number 1 driving
student, time travel obsessed Eugene (Prince Tawro), a fake reality show
based on Jeremy's "comeback trail", tons of drugs, and a stock
car race as the film's ultimate decider, and you got ... well, a much
bigger mess for sure! Driven to Succeed is a rather mad
little movie, blending elements of stoner and gross-out comedy with
political thriller elements and pieces of media satire rather
deliberately, to eventually throw some science fiction motives into the
mix when nobody expects them anymore ... and somehow it works very well
together, as the script is very cleverly structured and features
characters that despite being complete assholes are rather relatable. Now
add to that a directorial effort that knows when to restrain itself to not
just go overboard for a few big laughs, and a competent cast, and you've
got yourself ... well, a rather mad little movie, but one you'll enjoy!
