For years, Cassady (Karlee Rose) has been the undisputed champion of
the all-women MMA promotion EFC - but now she has been beaten by Alexa
(Kathryn Aboya), something which resulted in a post-fight brawl, and has
taken a chunk out of Alexa's confidence, so much so that she has visions
of her deceased sister Scatlett (Avaah Blackwell), who does nothing but
constantly berate her. In the meantime, the EFC's chairwoman Donna
(Stephanie Jones) is coming under fire from shareholder Frank (Richard
Zeppieri), who believes in nothing but the big buck, and who wants to
either liquidate the company on the quick or force a new PR specialist,
John (Alex Cruz), onto Donna. Donna sees herself forced to accept John,
and at first he really brings result, like a big TV deal for the title -
even though Alexa has just won it fair and square -, with hopefully a
re-match Alexa vs Cassady. Only, Cassady loses her first in a series of
elimination matches, and is out of contention. This means a drop in
ratings since she's still the star of the promotion. And then Donna dies,
and since she has left no heir, her assets are to be auctioned off - much
to the joy of Frank. Also with Donna out of the way, John starts playing
his own game which is benefitting mostly himself - and Donna's interim
successor Nicki (Andrea Drepaul) just lacks the power to counteract him.
But Cassady isn't done with EFC yet, and with Nicki's blessing she tries
to save the promotion - but that can only work if she first comes to terms
with her arch-enemy Alexa ... Now what everyone will probably
first notice about this movie is how well and realistic the fights are
staged, and they're caught by wonderfully dynamic camerawork, too. But EFC
is really more than just a series of fights as it manages to place them,
and place them well, in a story that's equal parts white-collar crime
thriller and character piece, and that weaves the character arc of its
lead rather effortlessly into the story arc without one standing in the
way of the other. And of course, an overall elegant direction and a solid
cast only help to bring this movie quite as well.
