Researchers Samantha (Ally Tully) and Benny (Michael Zuccula) and
photographer Mike (Michael Varrati) set out to investigate the story of
Gorham House, a long abandoned hotel on Block Island that's supposed to be
haunted, probably since the day a "cursed" boat, the Erebus,
drifted onto the island in the 1850's. Since then, mysterious (and
probably paranatural) things have happened in Gorham House at least three
times in younger history:
- 1957: Robert (Michael A. LoCicero) lives in Gorham House like a
recluse, and performs macabre rituals in its basement. People start to
worry about him, also because of his haggard looks and the fact that
his wife hasn't been around for weeks, but he claims she's just sick
and he's drained due to that ... but then a girl (Nicole Lasala)
disappears and the trail leads to his house ...
- 1974: A photographer (Marc Vos) chooses Gorham House as his base of
operations, only to find out his Polaroid camera seems to pick up the
ghosts in the house he can't see with his own eye - and the ghosts are
closing in ...
- 2008: A group of paranormal researchers with all the
state-of-the-art equipment want to give Gorham House a thorough
workover, and they're amazed about the paranormal traces they pick up
- but they haven't taken into account that whatever may live there
might not be interested to be investigated quite that thoroughly - or
at all, really ...
Genre veteran Michael Berryman can be seen as Gorham House's caretaker
- who wouldn't set foot into the house for the life of it.
Erebus is a ghost story - of rather a series of ghost stories -
that's old fashioned in the best sort of way: It doesn't relie on
spectacle in terms of fancy special effects, doesn't try to explain things
away in whatever convincing or unconvincing manner but really goes for the
creepy aspects of its stories - and succeeds every time, putting its
emphasis firmly on atmosphere and story instead. And add to that a very
competent ensemble cast, a suitably subtle directorial effort, and also
impressive locations, and you've got yourself a pretty good film!!!
