Science has discovered a usually recessive gene that explains why some
people are totally ruthless and murder remorselessly - pretty much the
"evil gene". And in a top secret penitentiary, doctor Mobley
(Craig M. Thomas) and associates try to develop some medication to control
that evil gene and thus have been given a few death row inmates as labrats
... that is, until the good doctor shoots himself in the head. The FBI
sends in one of its agents, Griff (Richard Speight jr) to investigate the
death as there are some questions left unanswered about this
"suicide", and once Griff starts looking for clues, he finds
more questions than answers, plus he is met with open disdain by most of
the staff, especially the warden (Lindsey Ginter). But he does find
associates in Dr Mobley's assistant Dana (Cameron Richardson) and in
prison priest Father Warren (Ted Heyck), even if the latter tries to
persuade him demons are at work at the prison. But Griff has plenty of
demons of his own, like his brother killing his whole family and then
himself - a brother who comes to haunt him to this day. So that, his
addiction to antidepressants, and the very depressing atmosphere of the
place as such do their work on him and slowly cause him to break - and the
result of this is a whole lot less than desirable ... Even if
the scientific premise of The Evil Gene seems slightly ridiculous,
the movie manages to milk a very interesting and tense story out of it,
populated by colourful characters, most of them broken in one way or
another, and all of this is carried by a directorial effort that's heavy
on atmosphere, and first class pacing that has all the action, the moody
bits, and the shocks and suspense in all the right places. Totally worth
a look!
