Charlie (Bruce Bennett) is ruling a Caribbean island with an iron hand
and with the help of his whip he frequently uses on the natives and even
his associates. For Charlie is using the island as headquarters for his
smuggling operations, mainly smuggling dope but also arms. His main
employees are the doctor, an old alcoholic who has fallen from grace in
the US, and David (Robert Bray), a honest man who says he has come here
for woman troubles - but in the end he will of course turn out to be an
undercover FBI agent.
One day, Glory (Tania Velia) comes to the island, having been hired by
Charlie as an (exotic) dancer, but while she soon realizes what a dump the
island is, she has also realized there is no easy way out and she has to
keep Charlie at arm's length, even if he desperately tries to get into her
pants. But she makes friends with the natives, who soon treat her as some
kind of saint, and with David of course, because, hey, a film like this
needs a love story.
Everybody on the island lives in fear of Charlie, but that changes when
Charlie tries to rape Glory and she is only just saved by David. Then
everybody on the island decides tht is the best to keep Charlie under
siege in his house/cantina and sit it out while David blows up his arms
depot and destroys his drugrunning operation ... but eventually, Charlie
gets away and dukes it out with David - and he seems to be defeating David
too, until native boy Naru (Ralph A.Rodriguez), who has been treated
especially mean by Charlie, grabs Charlie's whip and makes him pay ...
David and company want to send Charlie off the island on the next ship,
but unfortunately the next ship is that of Captain Fred (Miguel Ángel
Álvarez), and he is one of Charlie's allies. It all ends in a big fight
at the end of which Charlie is eaten by sharks and Fred and his men
hightail it on their ship ... right into the arms of the coast guard.
And David and Glory ?
They stay on the island to you-know-what ...
The film is prety much what the title already suggests: a cheap piece
of sensationalistic exploitation cinema - but as that of course, Fiend
of Dope Island does remarkably well, it's one of these B-movie wonders
that you know are pulpy, trashy and a tad silly as well ... yet you can't
help but marvel at their effectiveness. And Bruce Bennett is actually
pretty good as the island dictator gone bonkers, while former Miss
Yugoslavia Tania Velia handles her blonde bombshell role (thjat includes a
few short topless scenes) remarkably well.
