Gilbert (James Michael Tyler) is a lonely postman who really doesn't
think much of himself, and really doesn't see how much happiness he
spreads through his very personalized way to deliver the mail, and his
attempts to make everybody on his route happy - culminating in him
recreating hand-drawn postcards for one woman on his route (Roxane
Mesquida) when her boyfriend (Andrew Creer) stops writing her from his
trip around the world. But it takes the help of a blind and disillusioned
poet for Gilbert to finally open him up and not only give but also recieve
happiness from the woman (Nicole LaLiberte) he's been secretly in love
with for years ... The Gesture and the Word is quite
simply a sweet movie, one that actually lives from small gestures rather
than big words and tells its story in an unassuming way that finds the
beauty in things (images and otherwise) without drifting off into kitsch).
And grounded performances by all of the involved make the movie very
palpable, too, and a joy to watch.
