An evil alien, the Ruler Nazo (Wataru Yamakawa), who flies around in a powerdrill like
spaceship that is also able to move underground (thanks to the drill), has
thrown planet Ikarus out of its orbit & has arranged it so that it
eventually hits earth ... and only the Pearl Research Institute knows it.
So Doctor Pearl invents a new Super Destruction Beam Cannon to blow
Ikarus out of space, & the cannon has only one shortcoming: it lacks a
lense strong enough to produce the beam.
Eventually, Doc Pearl's team, led by Captain Yamatone (Sonny Chiba)
finds a mineral that proves to be strong enough fro the beam on an island
that seems to be all that's left over from Atlantis, but of course the
Nazo armies are close behind them, & swoon enough, Yamatone's team
finds itself trapped ... when they find a sarcophabus, & in it a sort
of superbeing with a skull shaped head ... but it takes Pearl's
granddaughter Emily to awaken the creature. Once awake, the creature
introduces himself as Golden Bat (Hirohisa Nakata) & promises Emily to
help her whenever she should call him. & furthermore he helps Yamatone
& company out of this here jam - which isn't too difficult a task
since Golden Bat is a fierce fighter, has superstrength, can fly &
bullets can't harm him ...
Back at the Pearl Research Institute, the Doctor finishes his cannon
with the new mineral, but Ikarus is still too far away to be shot out of
the skies ... which means waiting. But since, the Ruler Nazo has also
learned about the Super Destruction Beam Cannon, & figures he has to
get hold of it, since it will be an indispensable weapon for conquering
the universe ... plus it would, if properly used, ruin his plans of
destroying earth.
But when Ruler Nazo's men get hold of the cannon, they have to realize
the mineral is missing, & since it cannot be found anywhere in the
Institute, they kidnap the Doctor to tell them where the mineral is ...
which he doesn't. Even when they kidnap his granddaughter Emily he stays
mum ... and to keep Golden Bat from coming, the Nazos even capture Golden
Bat's messenger bat.
After the Doc won't talk, the Nazos turn his Institute inside out with
no success ... until Ruler Nazo figures that Golden Bat has to have the
mineral ... so they have to call their worst foe after all - and somehow
they cause him to lose the mineral, even if he manages to save the Doctor
and his granddaughter.
On the day of Ikarus' impact on earth, the Nazos' drill-ship
self-consciously drills its way to the surface in the middle of Tokyo ...
but both Yamatone and Golden Bat manage to enter the ship, & while
Yamatone, after a fierce battle, manages to retrieve the Beam Cannon,
Golden Bat causes the ship to blow to kingdom come, & Ruler Nazo with
it. Then the Beam Cannon is used to blow Ikarus to kingdom come as well.
It's only then that the super being bids farewell to his human friends
...
Nope, this is not an intelligent, sophisticated, subtle film, this is a
superhero saga in the tradition of American movie serials (even down to
the film's narrative structure), but filmed in glorious 1960's sets &
outfits. In other words, you might love it, even though you know it's
childish crap.
