Halloween is in two days, so for teenaged Mandy (Stephanie Town) it's
high time to tell her best friend, new-in-town Melissa (Madeleine Murphy)
the urban legend about Aunt Ethel's (Gail Yost) house, a house where each
year countless trick-or-treaters disappear, and the only reason Aunt Ethel
has never been brought to justice is because no bodies could ever be found
- which is of little surprise as according to lore, she turns her victims
into chocolate pickles for other trick-or-treaters and just burns the
inedible remains of the bodies. Of course, Melissa, a good girl if there
ever was one, doesn't believe such old wives' tales, especially coming
from Mandy who usually thinks about little else than fun, partying, and of
course sex. But then she and her boyfriend Mark (Sean Michael Gloria) want
to check out Aunt Ethel's house on Halloween night, as they both have lost
family linked to the goings-on in the house, and they invite Melissa along
for the ride, who agrees more out of curiosity than anything else. But
Mandy and Mark have brought weapons to finally have their revenge on the
evil woman - but that's not to say that Aunt Ethel isn't prepared for a
thing like this, and quite obviously, who kills children doesn't shy away
from killing adults as well ...
Halloween at Aunt Ethel's is by no means a film that
reinvents the horror genre - quite the contrary, it stays quite firmly
within the genre formula. But that doesn't mean that the film isn't much
fun nevertheless, it's fast-paced, at times quirky, has all the violence
in all the right moments, and a few twists that might surprise one. And a
competent cast playing well-developed characters or at least in some cases
good caricatures doesn't hurt one bit either to make this pretty
entertaining, actually.
