A Hantu Muka Rata, a female faceless ghost that strangles people using
her hair, is terrorizing the countryside, and everybody, it seems, is
living in fear - everybody but horror painter Jun, who becomes more and
more obsessed with the ghost, so much so that he tries to track the Hantu
Muka Rata down - but not without hearing her story first: When still
alive, the ghost was lovely Laxmi, daughter of a rich man who was liked in
the whole region - but then a gang of thugs decided to gangrape her, and
after the crime was committed, they threw acid into her face. In
desperation, Laxmi then took her own life - but returned as a spirit of
vengeance. Jun does everything to track the Hantu Muka Rata down, as he
figures he can release her by just painting her, but for the longest time,
she remains elusive, killing many of those close to Jun but leaving him in
peace - until he gets hold of her umbrella, lures her to her family's
long-abandoned home, and again he tries to put her onto canvas - but she
has other things in store for him and ultimately rips off his face ... Rather
disappointing horror film that might have an interesting set-up - a
painter trying to track down a ghost - but makes very little of it,
instead just presents the audience with cliché after cliché, and when it
comes to shocks, the film is remarkably restrained and at times pretty
clumsy even, so somehow the horror as such never really hits the right
note, which dosen't really help in getting things going. Pretty much a
waste of time.
