One evening, a group of youngsters - Chris (Frankie Avalon), Sheila (Jill
Haworth), Gary (Mark Wynter) & his girlfriend Dorothy (Carol Dilworth) as
well as his mistress Sylvia (Gina Warwick), Peter (Richard O'Sullivan ) &
his girlfriend Madge (Veronica Doran), Henry (Robin Stewart), & Richard
(Julian Barnes), whose idea it was in the first place - decide to visit a
haunted house, just for a laugh, but once each one of them goes ghosthunting on
his own, Gary is brutally stabbed ... & soon it becomes clear to the kids
that it must have been one of them. But what do our kids do ? Go to the police
? No. They decide to hide the body somewhere miles away to not become
involved in a murder case, like they were involved in a drug bust just months
back. A nosey police inspector (Dennis Price - in a role that was
originally written for Boris Karloff) finds some clues leading to them anyway,
but fails to come to any right conclusions. & then there's Sylvia's
ex-lover Bob (George Sewell), who all along acted jealous enough towards
Sylvia's relation to Gary in the first place to be a suspect, & he suddenly
panics over a lighter he gave to Sylvia with her name engraved which she might
have lost uin the haunted house, so he goes to retrieve the lighter, &
wouldn't you know it, he is stabbed himself. The kids meanwhile get more
& more nervous, so Chris has the glorious idea to go back to the haunted
house to recreate the night of the murder to find out who the killer was to
.... well, nobody has really thought it through. However, once back in the
house, Dorothy has a nervous breakdown, & Peter, Madge & Henry take her
home, which leaves Chris, Richard & Sheila behind, & suddenly Richard
starts acting more than a little strange, & tells of his fear of haunted
houses & the dark, & how he loves the full moon (& wouldn't you
know it, just outside, the moon is full), & eventually, he brutally stabs
Chris into the groin (ouch), then goes after Sheila ... but thank god Henry,
who has claimed to want to leave out of cowardice, has phoned the police &
they arrive before Richard can stab Sheila too. A naive blend of an old
dark house-whodunnit & the Swinging London in the 60's - 2 elements
that, you might have guessed, do not go all that well together, especially when
Frankie Avalon is thrown into the mix. This however does not keep the movie
vfrom being entertaining - if on a somewhat unintentional level. The result
could be described as not art or a genre classic, but a good-natured &
entertaining piece of nostalgia, & ion my book, there's nothing wrong with
that.
